Hieroglyphic Language

Hieroglyphics is the oldest language in the world. It was used in 3500 BC by Egyptians. The dates of invention varies by research. This language has been used from early to end of the Egyptian empire. Hieroglyphics is very hard to learn. It has different types of pictures instead of letters. This language was found on limestone. This was one of the first discoveries in communication. This was a new way of communication. They used to carve messages on the wall, limestones and wood. This was a new way to convey the messages to eachother.

  1. I really enjoy looking at and researching old languages so I really enjoyed this posting on Hieroglyphic Language. It is amazing that the Egyptians were able to literally create a means of communication. I am sure that there were even more symbols and pictures then just the ones shown on the blog. I wonder what it was like to learn the language. Now we are taught language as babies, as soon as we are able to speak or make sound. It becomes ingrained and just a part of life. Imagine what it would have been like to have to create a language from scratch and to have to learn it?

Another really interesting form of written language is Ogham. Although it is not as old as hieroglyphics, it is similar in how they used shapes and pictures to depict letters and meanings. This language was found mainly in Ireland, but has also been found in England and Scotland as well. One interesting fact about Ogham is that it is written from bottom to top. Imagine if we had to read like that today?
